Some years ago Vahan Misakyan, a member of the Internet Society Armenia chapter NGO (ISOC AM), developed a lightweight library management software with a user friendly interface, which could be run on slow computers by librarians with elementary knowledge about computer.
The aim was to help rural libraries to get used computers with preinstalled software and let them start operations after 3-4 hours of training. It opened a perspective of equipping all rural libraries with hardware/software and let them start working on an up-to-date level.
Vahan Misakyan shared his idea with the administration of the ISOC AM and was enthusiastically supported. ISOC AM provided several computers and the program started. Being limited in resources ISOC AM decided to apply to the global ISOC “Beyond the Net” grant program and succeeded.
The grant program under the name “Computers, services and WiFi Internet for rural libraries” started in 2017 and during a year 70 computers with library management software were installed in rural libraries.
The program was accepted in rural regions with a great gratitude and there is a growing demand for more and more computers. We estimated the demand of rural libraries reaching 2000.
The grant program has already finished but ISOC AM and ISOC Armenia chapter that had joined the program continue seeking more computers. Recently ISOC AM had purchased 40 used computers for rural libraries.
In order to attract more attention to the program from potential donors, we started the web site http://rural-libraries.am and facebook page Rural libraries of Armenia.
So the main sponsors of the program are ISOC AM NGO and ISOC Armenia Chapter.
We hope that more donors will join this benevolent program.
